From Proto-Germanic *gabindaną, equivalent to ġe- + bindan. Cognate with Old Saxon gibindan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌱𐌹𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (gabindan). Compare Old High German gibintan.
