From Proto-Germanic *gangārijaz (compare Proto-Germanic *gangilaz (“goer, walker”)), equivalent to gang + -ere. Cognate with Old Frisian gunger, Middle Low German genger, Old High German gangāri. Compare also Old Norse gangari, gangvari (“horse”).
