Cognate with Danish forlade, Norwegian Bokmål forlate, Norwegian Nynorsk forlate, forlata, Icelandic forláta, German verlassen, Dutch verlaten, English forlet, forelet, forleet, forleit, forlete, foreleit, Scots forleet (to forsake, abandon), Saterland Frisian ferläite (to forlet, abandon) and West Frisian forlitte (to forlet). Equivalent to för- + låta.
