Etymology

Back-formation from fraŭlino (Miss) (subtracting suffix -ino (female)), from German Fräulein.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈfrawlo/
  • Hyphenation: fraŭ‧lo
  • (file)

Noun

fraŭlo (accusative singular fraŭlon, plural fraŭloj, accusative plural fraŭlojn)

  1. bachelor (unmarried man)

Usage notes

Unlike sinjoro (Mister), sinjorino (Madam, Mistress) and fraŭlino (Miss), fraŭlo is not used as courtesy title. Not quite equivalent to English "Master", as that is age-based rather than marriage-based.
