fotnot

Swedish

Etymology

fot + not, calque of German Fußnote, attested since 1902.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈfuːtˌnuːt/

Noun

fotnot c

  1. A footnote.
Boken gav ett akademiskt intryck eftersom den hade många fotnoter.
"The book gave an academic impression because it had a lot of footnotes."

Usage notes

Colloquially, the plural form fotnötter can also be used. The inflection then follows the same pattern as nöt, "nut". This pattern is based on an ironic usage of an umlaut similar to those in the plural forms of Swedish nouns such as mus, "mouse", gås, "goose", and tand, "tooth".
