fodya

Chichewa

Etymology

Borrowed from Portuguese folha (leaf). It belongs to a very old stratum of borrowings, as evidenced by the fact that it was recorded by Portuguese explorer António Gamitto in 1832 (as fodea) without him realising that it was in fact from Portuguese.
