Etymology
Probably from Arabic فِي الْمَكان (fī l-makān, “in the place, on the spot”); compare Maltese imkien (“place”), kullimkien (“everywhere”). Perhaps from situations where suggesting that something be done “on the spot” implies that it be done by all of those present “together”, or, relatedly, where adressing all of those present “on the spot” means to address all of them “together”. Alternatively from Arabic فِي الْإمْكان (fī l-ʾimkān, “possible”, literally “in the capacity”), but this seems semantically even further off.
