Etymology

From Old Catalan fe, from Old Occitan (compare Occitan fen), from Latin fēnum, faenum (compare French foin, Spanish heno), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-no-, from *dʰeh₁(y)-. The Old Catalan fe was converted into its modern form, fenc, due to influence from a northeastern dialect, and to help distinguish it from fe (“faith”).
