From Proto-Albanian *aiu̯esi̯ā (Jokl L.-k. U. 34), from Proto-Indo-European *aiu̯-, *ai̯u- 'vital energy, vitality'. Cognate to Ancient Greek αἰές (aiés, always), Latin aevus (eternity, age, time) and Gothic aiws (aiws, time, eternity, world).
