From Old Spanish escoger, equivalent to es- + coger, or possibly from a Vulgar Latin *excolligere, from Latin ex- + colligere (to gather). Compare Portuguese escolher, Asturian escoyer, Galician escoller, Extremaduran escogel, Catalan escollir.
