Etymology

Via other European languages (e.g., French épithète), ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek ἐπίθετον (epítheton, adjective), the neuter of ἐπίθετος (epíthetos, attributed, added), from ἐπιτιθέναι (epitithénai, to add on).
