Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *apir, from Proto-Indo-European *h1(o/e)pi 'on, upon'. Cognate to Ancient Greek ὄπιθε (ópithe, behind), ὄπιθεν (ópithen, behind) (Alternative form of ὄπισθεν (ópisthen, behind, backwards, in the future)).[1] Alternatively, Orel constructs Proto-Albanian *eupera, a secondary analogical ablaut variant of Proto-Indo-European *uperos.[2]
