From a Vulgar Latin root *intortiliāre, from Latin tortilis (twisted, coiled). See also Old French entort as the past participle of entordre. Compare Catalan entortellar, Spanish entortijar, Italian intortigliare, Friulian intorteâ, cf. also Romanian întortochea.
