From Middle French, Old French enchevestrer; equivalent to en- + chevêtre + -er, or, according to the TLFi, from a Vulgar Latin *incapistrāre or *encapistrāre, from Latin capistrāre, present active infinitive of capistrō. Compare Catalan, Occitan, and Spanish encabestrar, Portuguese encabrestar, Italian incapestrare, Romanian încăpăstra, Sardinian incrabistare.
