From Ottoman Turkish جهنم (cehennem), from Arabic جَهَنَّم (jahannam), from Hebrew גהינום (Gehinóm), from גַּיא בֶּן הִנֹּם (Gé bén Hinóm, Valley of Hinnom's Son). Compare Macedonian џенем (dženem), and obsolete and dialectal Bulgarian джендем (džendem).
