Etymology

Aphetic form of dialectal ndëgjoj, from Old Albanian ëndiglonj (Buzuku), from Proto-Albanian *jāgnja, a derivative of gjoj. Compare Old High German jagon (“to hunt”). More at gjoj[1]

From earlier ëndiglonj, from Proto-Albanian *intellegɔnjœ, from Latin intellegо̄ (“I understand”).[2]
