From Old Irish druï, druí (druid; magician, wizard, diviner), from Proto-Celtic *dru-wid- (literally tree-knower), from Proto-Indo-European *dóru (tree) + *weyd- (to know). Cognate with Scottish Gaelic draoidh, Manx druaight, druaightagh, druaightys, Welsh dryw.
