donmak

Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish طڭمق ,طوڭمق ,ضوڭمق (doŋmak, to freeze, become ice, solidify, become rigid, be frozen to death), from Proto-Turkic *doŋ- (to freeze).[1] Related to Turkish *doŋ (cold, frost) (for which see don). Possibly also related to Proto-Mongolic *daɣara- (to freeze) and Proto-Tungusic *doŋota (cold, frost),or Middle Chinese 凍/tuŋ/("to freeze"). Compare Mongolian даарах (daarah, to freeze up), Evenki доӈото (doŋoto, frost). Perhaps from a common source or a result of language contacts.[2]
