dikë

Albanian

Etymology

Unclear, a borrowing from Serbo-Croatian dika (pride, glory) has been proposed, but with semantic issues.[1] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *dīkā. Cognate to Lithuanian dykas (iddle, empty), Proto-Slavic *dikъ 'wild'.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [diːk]

Noun

dikë f (indefinite plural dika, definite singular dika, definite plural dikat)

  1. great desire, lust, envy
