Etymology

From the noun deseo; cf. Latin dēsīderō, dēsīderāre (long for, desire, feel the want of, miss, regret). Possibly corresponds to a Vulgar Latin verb *dēsidiāre, itself perhaps a crossing between Latin dēsīderāre and invidiāre, from invidia[1]. Compare Portuguese desejar, Catalan desitjar.
