coutume

French

Etymology

From Old French coustume, from a Vulgar Latin *costūmen, a contraction of Latin cōnsuētūdinem, accusative of cōnsuētūdō (custom), from cōnsuēscō (accustom, habituate; accustom oneself), itself from con- (with) + suēscō (become used or accustomed; accustom, train). Compare also Medieval Latin costuma. Doublet of costume and consuétude. Cognate with Spanish costumbre, Catalan costum.
