From Vulgar Latin *cuniclus, contracted form of Latin cunīculus, from Ancient Greek κόνικλος (kóniklos); compare Portuguese coelho, Spanish conejo, Sicilian cunigghiu. Also compare Occitan conilh, Old French connil, and similar forms in northern Italian dialects which may have influenced the Italian word.
