Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin *codabattula, from Latin coda < cauda (tail) + a derivative of battuō (to beat). Compare Aromanian coadã-baturã, cudubaturã, cutrubatã, Calabrese codivattula. See also similar formations in other Romance languages, with inverse order: Italian batticoda, Florentine dialect batticova, Occitan bateco.[1]
