Etymology

Of native Iranian origin, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *selp-. Cognate with Parthian 𐫝𐫡𐫁 (crb /čarb/, smooth, mild), Pashto څورب (śorb), Baluchi [script needed] (čarp, fat), Central Kurdish چەور (çewr, fat), Ossetian царв (carv, clarified butter) and Old Armenian ճարպ (čarp, fat), an Iranian borrowing.
