From a Vulgar Latin root *cytola, from a derivative of Ancient Greek ϰάτυλος (kátulos, seashell), or perhaps from an alteration of Latin cotyla (unit of capacity), from Ancient Greek κοτυλος (kotulos, pan); compare Italian ciotola.
