Etymology

Either a derivative of cip, or (if from t(ë?)- + *zipë) from Proto-Indo-European *gʰwih₂bʰ- 'shame, pudenda' (though the -p- instead of the expected *-b- remains unexplained). Compare Old English wif (woman, wife), Tocharian B kwīpe, Tocharian A kip (vagina).

Noun
