From Old French, inherited from Vulgar Latin *canīle, from Latin canis (“dog”). Compare English kennel, which is derived ultimately from the same source but via an Anglo-Norman/Old Northern French variant which preserved the /k/ sound and hence adopted the /k/ spelling.
