Etymology

From the now uncommon and mostly slang term calcanho (“foot; heel”), itself from Latin calcāneum (“heel”), whence also the learned borrowing calcâneo; less likely from a Vulgar Latin *calcaneāre. Appears as calcannar in Old Portuguese. Compare Spanish calcañar.
