From the now uncommon and mostly slang term calcanho (foot; heel), itself from Latin calcāneum (heel), whence also the learned borrowing calcâneo; less likely from a Vulgar Latin *calcaneāre. Appears as calcannar in Old Portuguese. Compare Spanish calcañar.
