buzağı

Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish بوزاغو (buzağu), بوزاغی (buzağı, a sucking calf), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (buzağu, calf), from Proto-Turkic *buŕagu (calf).[1] Compare Hungarian borjú (calf), a borrowing from Bulgar *burǝʷu. Akin to Proto-Mongolic *biraxu (calf) (cf. Mongolian бяруу (bjaruu, calf in its second year)), perhaps inherited from a common source[2] or a Turkic loanword.[3] Compare also Turkish dialectal buza- (to bear a calf).
