From Proto-Albanian *burmā, from Proto-Indo-European *bher-2 'to boil, swell; to get high'. Cognate to Latin fretum (a strait, sound, estuary, firth, channel), Low German Bärm, Bärme and Middle Dutch berm, barm (barm).
