From Proto-Albanian *burmā, from Proto-Indo-European *bher-2 'to boil, swell; to get high'. Cognate to Latin fretum (“a strait, sound, estuary, firth, channel”), Low German Bärm, Bärme and Middle Dutch berm, barm (“barm”).
