Originally probably meaning 'to call someone a pitiful man', from božec (“pitiful man”), ubog (“pitiful”) (cognate to Old Church Slavonic ubogъ (ubogŭ), Serbo-Croatian ubog, Russian убо́гий (ubógij), Czech ubohý); this in turn from Proto-Slavic *ubogъ (“having no share”), composed from *u- (“away, down”) and *bogъ (“share”).
