Usage notes

  • The dependent form is bi.
    Am bi thu ann? - Will you be there?
    Cha bhi sin furasta. - That will not be easy.
    Nach bi am bùth fosgailte? - Won't the shop be open?
  • The emphatic form, used especially when answering a question, is bithidh.
    Am bi e aig an taigh a-màireach? - Bithidh.
    Will he be at home tomorrow? - Yes.
  • Also used for the present habitual form, i.e. denoting current and ongoing regular activity. A periphrastic construction with verbal noun.
    Bidh mi ag èisteachd ris an rèidio.
    “I listen to the radio (often)"
    Am bi thu a’ cluich tàileasg? - Bithidh.
    "Do you play chess?” - Yes. (Lit. "Shall you play chess?” “I shall.”)
