From Proto-Germanic *bisehwaną (to look, besee), equivalent to be- + sēon. Cognate with Old Saxon bisehan, Old High German *bisehan, Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍃𐌰𐌹𐍈𐌰𐌽 (bisaiƕan).
