From Proto-Albanian *balbā, from Proto-Indo-European *bal-bal- 'barbaric speech', of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate to Ancient Greek βαβάζω (babázō, chats, talks indistinctly), Latin balbūtiō (to stammer, stutter), Lithuanian blebénti (babble).
