Etymology

From Middle English befilen, from Old English befȳlan (to befoul, defile, make dirty), from Proto-Germanic *bi- (be-) + *fūlijaną (to make foul), equivalent to be- + file. Cognate with Scots befile (to befile), Dutch bevuilen (to soil, dirty). See also defile.
