Etymology

From Middle High German betūren (also betiuren), a prefixation of tūren (to consider grave). Equivalent to modern be- + dauern (etymology 2), the simplex of which is now archaic. Pertaining to teuer (dear, expensive). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German dūren).
