Etymology

From auto + rack

Noun

autorack (plural autoracks)

  1. (US) A railroad vehicle designed for the transport of cars.
    • 2011, Josh Mack, The Hobo Handbook: A Field Guide to Living by Your Own Rules:
Autoracks, or car carriers, were developed to carry cars. Initially the railroads just transported automobiles single file on flat bed cars, but soon realized it was a pretty inefficient use of space and that they could double, and then even triple, the number of cars by adding levels above the first row. Hobos of the modern age who happened upon autoracks had struck gold.
