Maybe, he thought, looking for an excuse, the realization of assholedom was the beginning of wisdom.
Usage notes

Ofttimes misanalyzed by the native speakers and thus confused with assholehood (the state or condition of being an asshole). The only dialects that seem to draw a clear distinction between assholehood (the state or condition of being an asshole) and assholedom (the state or condition of an asshole) are Northern English dialects which still maintain the "hood/dom" distinction.
