Either from Latin eruncāre, present active infinitive of eruncō or from a + Latin runcāre, present active infinitive of runcō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rewk-. Another theory proposes a Vulgar Latin *averruncāre (“to distance that which is bad”), which is less likely. [1] Compare Aromanian aruc, arucari, Megleno-Romanian runc.
