From Ancient Greek ἀρχιεπίσκοπος (arkhiepískopos), from ἀρχι- (arkhi-, first, chief) + ἐπίσκοπος (epískopos, overseer), partly through Slavic, Old Church Slavonic архіепископъ (arxiepiskopŭ); compare Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian архиѐпископ.
