amiskowâciy-wâskahikanihk

Plains Cree

Etymology

From amiskwâciy (Beaver Hills) + wâskahikanihk (at the house [fur trade post]) or "at the Beaver Hills House", in turn from amisk (beaver) + wâciy (hill) and wâskahikan (house) + -ihk (at). The Cree term wâskahikanihk (at the house) was also used in other regions as the names for Grouard, Alberta and Cumberland House, Saskatchewan. Compare Ojibwe waakaa'igan (house, building).
