From the verb amiridz (see below), or from Latin merīdiēs (“noon, midday”); shift in meaning also found in Albanian dialect (Korça) mbriz (“midday nap for livestock”), standard mërzej (“to rest at noon (of animals)”). Compare Romanian meriză.
