allikas

Estonian

Etymology

Cognate to Finnish allikko. Possibly from a Baltic language, compare Lithuanian šaltenis (spring) and šaltinis (spring, source, that which is cold). While the expected initial h- is seen in older Estonian texts, its loss in Finnish is unexplained, possibly due to similar words starting with ala-.

Noun

allikas (genitive allika, partitive allikat)

  1. spring (source of water)
  2. source (where something comes from)
  3. (writing) reference
