Through French alkékenge, Spanish alquequenje, ultimately from Andalusian Arabic الكَاكَنْج (al-kākanj), from Arabic كَاكَنْج (kākanj, “bladder cherry”), from Persian کاکنج (kâkanj), کاکانج (kâkânj), کاکناگ (kâkanâg), resin from a tree in the mountains of Herat.
