Through French alkékenge, Spanish alquequenje, ultimately from Andalusian Arabic الكَاكَنْج‎ (al-kākanj), from Arabic كَاكَنْج‎ (kākanj, “bladder cherry”), from Persian کاکنج‎ (kâkanj), کاکانج‎ (kâkânj), کاکناگ‎ (kâkanâg), resin from a tree in the mountains of Herat.
