Etymology

Probably from the old form agro, from Vulgar Latin *acrus, *acrum, from Classical Latin acer, acrem, influenced by the Spanish verb agriar, or alternatively from a Vulgar Latin *acridus. Ultimately from Proto-Italic *akris, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ḱrós (“sharp”).
