From Middle French, from Old French agace (“magpie”), from Old High German agaza, agalstra, agastra, aga (“magpie”), from Proto-Germanic *agatjō (“magpie”), from Proto-Indo-European *aḱ- (“sharp, pointed”). Compare Occitan agaça, gacha, Italian gazza, and possibly Catalan garsa.
