From Middle High German zügel, zugel, from Old High German zugil, from Proto-Germanic *tugilaz (“rein on a horse”),[1] whence also Old Norse tygill, Old English tygel, Dutch teugel. Ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *dewk-.
