From Japanese  (ぜん) (zen), from Middle Chinese (MC d͡ʑiᴇn), an abbreviation of 禪那 (MC d͡ʑiᴇn nɑ), from Sanskrit ध्यान (dhyāna, a type of meditation). Akin to dhyana.
