Etymology

In the US military phonetic spelling alphabet for VC, which in turn is an abbreviation of Vietcong, which is a diminutive of the Vietnamese language term for Vietnamese Communist.

In the UK, it is also used in the phonetic alphabet for VC. In the UK this is primarily used as an abbreviation for the Victoria Cross which is the highest award of the United Kingdom honours system. This is awarded for "... most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy."[1]
