Ultima Thule occulting a background star
Capitalization of ultima Thule, from Latin ultima+Thule. Hyperbolically named as the furthest place, in March 2018.
Proper noun
- (astronomy, informal) The trans-Neptunian object, (486958) 2014 MU69, nicknamed "Ultima Thule", being the most distant place a space probe is targetted to visit, as of its naming in 2018.
Usage notes
Though the object is named for the farthest place, it is not the farthest known object in the Solar System as of the time of its naming, nor the time of its discovery (that being dwarf planet Eris). Neither is it the farthest known object or location, as all stars and galaxies are much more distant.
